Great Places 2020: Planning & Implementation

More than 250 people gathered at Watkins Park Community Center on Feb. 22 to see the unveiling of the King Commons and Twin Aire Great Places 2020 strategic plans. Thank you to all who contributed to these two plans. In addition, the Great Places Steering Committee is leading an outreach effort with funders, potential funders, and citywide/neighborhood implementation partners to develop key strategies and an implementation action plan to attract the funding and partnerships that will be needed to overcome key shared obstacles including infrastructure investment, public safety, improved educational access, commercial business attraction/development and more. Draft of Twin Aire Great Places Plan On August 14th, the Twin Aire Neighborhood Coalition met and shared a presentation on the latest draft of the plans for the area. The Twin Aire neighbors are busy working on the goals, objectives and action items for the Livability, Opportunity, Vitality and Education committees.  Several committee meetings have been and will continue to happen as the planning deadline approaches.

Building Vitality with Habitat for Humanity in Maple Crossing

Livability, opportunity, vitality, and education goals anchor each neighborhood in the Great Places 2020 initiative. Though the benefits of homeownership bolster each of these key components for a successful neighborhood, Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity will support the Maple Crossing neighborhood this year as they seek to diversify housing and support current residents. Two new Habitat homeowners will join the Maple Crossing neighborhood in 2017 and five current residents will have significant repairs completed on their homes. Near West Community Outreach Event

On June 8th, Source River West was able to participate in the IMPD SW District Community Day Collaboration. This year’s occasion was the 26th anniversary of the Indianapolis Police Department’s commitment to the Haughville neighborhood and the event was held in the Haughville Park. At the event participants enjoyed free food, a petting zoo, clowns, police department specialty vehicles, face painting, and plenty of fun for the whole family. Vendors, businesses, and organizations came prepared to hand out “freebies” and list of upcoming events to the members of the community as everyone enjoyed the fun of being together as a community. Source River West Hosts Successful Open House

In May, the Near West side of Indianapolis welcomed Source River West to the neighborhood. Source River West is an initiative started by the River West Great Place initiative, founded by IUPUI. Source’s mission is to be a hub for entrepreneurs interested in developing businesses in the area west of White River, particularly reviving the once thriving, Michigan Street. Source River West’s open house was on May 23rd, 2017 at the office, 2230 W Michigan Street.  The event was a major success and had a great turn out. Twin Aire Keeps Momentum Rolling Since the kick-off event earlier this Spring, the Twin Aire Livability, Opportunity, Vitality and Education committees have formed and are hosting initial meetings.  Dozens of volunteers have committed to this process and make up an excellent cross section of community neighbors, advocates, and professionals.
