LISC 2013 Success Stories

Across Indianapolis, LISC’s work touched the lives of hundreds of projects and thousands of people in 2013. Check out the stories below to see how LISC has helped people realize new possibilities throughout our community. And you can also download our 2013 annual report here.

LEEDing the Way

How do you grow a neighborhood in a sustainable way? Indianapolis’s Mapleton Fall Creek neighborhood—part of the Mid-North area—is working to become the first LEED-certified neighborhood in Indiana with help and support from LISC. It means a healthier environment—and that means a more desirable urban neighborhood for more people. See the whole story here.

One Hot Tamale

East Washington Street is quickly becoming a more desirable place to live and work, thanks to improved housing and the ongoing growth of local businesses. One restaurant in particular—a little tamale place called Tlaolli—is a shining example of how LISC and the community have come together to bring desirable businesses to the neighborhood and help them succeed. Lofty Goals. Serious Results.

For years, the Indy East Motel was a nuisance property in the Irvington neighborhood on Indianapolis’s east side. But that all changed when the Irvington Development Organization partnered with LISC to transform the property into Irvington Lofts—an affordable, sustainable residential property that’s attracting a lot of positive attention (and even more development). Check out the story behind Irvington Lofts here.

Brighter Kids. Brighter Future.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is expanding its scope to reach more kids with out-of-school-time programs—a need identified by a study made possible by funding from LISC. See how the Children’s Museum is bringing more opportunities for learning to underserved local kids here.

SE Congress - voteA Congress for the People

It’s a pretty exciting time to live on Indy’s Near Southeast side. Rehabilitated homes, rebuilt infrastructure, and commercial vitality are everywhere. The efforts LISC helped jumpstart through quality-of-life planning have been continued through the work of the Southeast Neighborhood Congress: local residents who represent the needs and desires of the community at the grassroots level. CWF VinceCentered on Success

For years, Vince had been struggling to maintain steady employment. So he began taking computer and finance classes at a Center for Working Families—one of seven throughout Indianapolis that LISC helps to oversee and support. Through his hard work and dedication, Vince was finally able to land the great job he was looking for. Get Vince’s full story here.
