What are LISC Sustainable Communities?
Building on the lessons learned from the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiatives (GINI), LISC has developed LISC Sustainable Communities: a single platform that brings together a full range of proven, long-term approaches to community revitalization. LISC provides a toolkit of resources to support comprehensive, neighbor-driven development in five initial neighborhoods and accomplish change by focusing on five priorities.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND:
Indianapolis has proven that distressed neighborhoods can reverse their decline, build more attractive and livable environments, and create economic opportunities for residents with a wide range of incomes – provided they have sufficient capital, technical expertise, and political will to support their unique agendas. LISC Sustainable Communities is a platform through which a wide range of partnerships can be focused on implementing neighborhood-driven revitalization in key areas.
Over time, Indianapolis LISC has expanded its field of expertise and its community partnerships to provide linkages, technical assistance, and financing for a wide array of quality-of-life issues facing today’s neighborhoods. The local direction of LISC corresponds to the organization’s national emphasis, which has resulted in a commitment of over $1 million in national support, leveraged by over $900,000 from local sources, for Indianapolis neighborhoods for 2010.
LISC Sustainable Communities is based on lessons from the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiatives (GINI): a three-year demonstration effort to promote a comprehensive approach to community development that improves quality of life through the integration of civic, social, physical, and economic development in Indianapolis neighborhoods that concluded in 2009. GINI leveraged more than $100 million in additional funding and more than 25,000 volunteer hours to help improve the quality of life in Indianapolis. Sustainable Communities continues LISC’s commitment to five of these demonstration neighborhoods by supporting the implementation of their quality-of-life plans. Over time, we hope to expand this platform into additional neighborhoods.
